In my previous role at a software startup serving law enforcement and intelligence agencies, we developed a system to analyze inmate calls for indicators of violence and criminal activity. A major state prison system was considering our product, and during a demonstration, they inquired about its compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). This presented a complex challenge, as our existing system hadn't been specifically designed with ADA accessibility in mind.
To address this, I initiated a multi-step problem-solving process:
- Information Gathering: I immediately researched ADA compliance requirements relevant to software, focusing on areas like screen reader compatibility, keyboard navigation, and alternative text for visual elements. I also consulted with our legal and compliance teams to understand the specific implications for our product and clients.
- Technical Assessment: I conducted a thorough audit of our current software architecture and user interface to identify specific areas that fell short of ADA standards.
- Solution Development: Based on the assessment, I collaborated with our engineering team to brainstorm and prioritize potential solutions. This involved exploring various technical approaches, such as implementing ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) attributes, ensuring proper semantic HTML structure, and developing alternative input methods.
- Implementation and Testing: We then implemented the chosen solutions, followed by rigorous testing. This included manual testing using screen readers and keyboard navigation, as well as automated accessibility checks.
- Client Communication: Throughout this process, I maintained open communication with the potential client, providing updates on our progress and demonstrating our commitment to meeting their accessibility needs.
By taking a structured and proactive approach, we were able to identify the gaps, develop effective solutions, and ensure our product met the necessary ADA standards, ultimately strengthening our proposal and demonstrating our dedication to serving all users.
