Forward deployed engineer: the role, pay and who is hiring (2026)

A forward deployed engineer (FDE) is a software engineer who works inside one customer’s problem and ships a working system for it, from the first discovery call to production. The title comes from Palantir, where product engineers were called “Devs” and forward deployed engineers “Deltas”.

Palantir puts the difference in four words each: a product engineer owns one capability for many customers, an FDE owns one customer and many capabilities. That is still the clearest test of an FDE opening today: what does the role own in production?

The role spread fast with AI. Companies selling models and AI platforms need engineers who can turn them into something a customer actually runs, so OpenAI, Anthropic, Scale AI, Databricks and Salesforce all hire FDEs now, and so do many AI startups.

FDE vs solutions engineer vs sales engineer

  • Forward deployed engineer

Builds and deploys a solution for a particular customer’s problem, into production.

  • Solutions engineer

Designs and demonstrates technical solutions; whether it continues into production varies by company.

  • Sales engineer

Technical work that supports a sale; success is usually a sales outcome, often with variable pay.

  • Product software engineer

Builds one capability for many customers, from a product backlog.

Titles overlap between companies. The useful test is what the role owns in production.

The interview

  1. 1DecompositionTurning a vague customer problem into requirements, sub-problems, a data and system design, and a plan. Palantir is known for this round; most FAANG loops have no equivalent.
  2. 2CodingA production-grade coding bar: a live pair-coding round or an online assessment, often with SQL or an API task.
  3. 3System designDesigning the system you would deploy for the customer, including data, model calls, evaluation and failure handling.
  4. 4Customer caseA take-home or live case where you scope and present a solution to a customer’s workflow. OpenAI’s FDE loop is reported to include one.

Rounds vary by company and team; candidate reports are patterns, not guarantees.

Where the role leads

Palantir documents engineers moving between FDE and product engineering, and on into product, growth and hiring roles. A deployment that exposes a missing feature often turns into a change to the core platform, which makes the move to product engineering natural.

Elsewhere the evidence is about skills, not measured outcomes: FDEs build customer discovery, architecture and production delivery together, the mix that senior delivery leads, solutions architects and founders draw on. No study shows how often FDEs take each path.

Frequently asked

What does a forward deployed engineer do?

An FDE works with one customer at a time to scope their problem, build the software, deploy it to production and keep it running. It is engineering work with customer contact, not a sales or support role.

What is the difference between an FDE and a solutions engineer?

An FDE owns implementation through to production for a customer. A solutions engineer usually designs and demonstrates the solution; how far into production they go varies by company. Check what the role owns in production.

How much does a forward deployed engineer earn?

In the US, published base ranges run from about $135,000 (Palantir) to $320,000 (Anthropic’s salary band). In India, Levels.fyi reports a median total compensation of about ₹17.6 lakh, with advertised startup ranges from ₹7 lakh to ₹50 lakh by experience.

How do I become a forward deployed engineer?

Most roles ask for solid production coding first, then evidence of customer-facing delivery. Palantir hires from one year of experience, OpenAI asks for five. Ship real systems, learn to scope vague problems, and practise decomposition and customer case interviews.

Is forward deployed engineer a good career?

Demand is rising fast: FDE postings in India grew about 19 times from June 2025 to June 2026. The role builds rare skills across engineering and customers. Expect travel, often 20 to 50%.
