How the pay check works

The pay check tells you whether you are underpaid by placing your pay against the ranges employers post for your role, city and seniority, then shows what the top of the market pays and which openings would pay you more.

  1. Step 1

Tell it your role, city and years

Pick the role you do today, where you work and how long you have done it. Add your total yearly pay, and a LinkedIn profile or résumé if you want the report to read your skills.

  2. Step 2

    It finds your cohort

Your pay is placed against every live posting for the same role, city and seniority that states a pay range. When a cohort has fewer than 30 postings with pay, it widens to the whole US, then drops seniority, and the report says which one it used.

  3. Step 3

You get your percentile and the gap

The report shows where you sit between the 10th and 90th percentile, what the top quarter of the market pays, the skills those roles ask for, and real openings paying more than you earn now.

Questions

How do I know if I am underpaid?

Compare your total yearly pay with what employers post for the same role, city and seniority. Below the 25th percentile of posted ranges usually means you are underpaid for the market; above the 75th means you are paid well. The pay check does this comparison for you in about 20 seconds.

Where does the salary data come from?

From pay ranges that employers publish in their own job postings, read daily from company careers pages and ATS boards. It is posted pay, not self-reported pay, so it reflects what companies are offering now.

Is the pay check free?

Yes. It is free, needs no card, and your exact pay is never shown to anyone. A shareable version of your result hides the number.

Which roles and cities are covered?

AI engineers, ML engineers, software engineers, data scientists and product managers in San Francisco, New York, Seattle and remote US roles. A cohort needs at least 30 postings with pay; below that the report widens to the whole US.
