Identify the repeated expensive operation

A “Priority Queue Problem” is not enough to select an algorithm. Ask for inputs, required output, whether the highest or lowest score is selected repeatedly, how scores evolve, and whether elements may be removed or revisited. Restate the operation sequence. If each step needs the current best candidate, show the scan-based baseline and replace it with a heap.

Define entries precisely, including priority, identifier, and any tie-break field. Maintain the invariant that after invalid/stale roots are discarded, the root is the best legal next choice. This makes lazy-update designs safe even when decrease-key is unavailable. Heap operations cost O(log n) each, yielding O(p log p) for p insertions/extractions and O(p) potential storage; include output cost separately. Test empty queues, equal priorities, updates, removals, and termination. Do not claim a priority queue is inherently a graph or scheduling solution: its correctness depends on the selection property of the real prompt.
