Use a non-software analogy (think of a junior research analyst). State the system's behavior in business terms: it surfaces the right answer about ~85% of the time on the right kinds of questions, fails in a few known ways (when the source doc contradicts itself, when the question is outside the indexed corpus, when the wording is ambiguous), and we measure each of those. Offer the framework the company uses: an eval set + confidence scores + a human-in-the-loop QA for the failing slice. Offer to set expectations for an SLA-style accuracy target.
