Imagine teaching a computer like you'd teach a child. You show it lots of examples – like showing a child pictures of cats and dogs. After seeing enough examples, the computer starts to recognize patterns and can tell the difference between a cat and a dog on its own, even if it hasn't seen that specific picture before.
