Their background
I recently had the chance to interview for a Junior Software Engineer role at Cast Software. I applied through a referral, and one of my friends in the industry referred me after seeing the opening on LinkedIn. That made the entire process a bit smoother since referrals can sometimes fast-track your application. Within a week, I got a call from the HR team to schedule the interviews.
Round by round

Hiring Manager Round45 min
This round was all about my previous experiences, particularly focusing on my college projects. I was asked to elaborate on the tech stack I used, some specific contributions I made to the projects, and the challenges I faced during their development. Key questions included:
- "What tech stack did you use for this project, and why?"
- "What were some obstacles you faced during this project, and how did you overcome them?"
- "Based on your projects, how do you see yourself contributing to our team?" I felt it was more about showcasing my understanding of core concepts and how well I could explain the work I had done.

Frontend Focused Round60 min
Next, I had a Frontend focused interview with team lead. This round was very hands-on and technical. He asked about my frontend projects, and specific questions on core JavaScript concepts like closures, promises, and event handling. A few of the key questions included:
- "Explain the concept of closures in JavaScript and give an example."
- "What’s the difference between var, let, and const in JavaScript?"
- "Tell me about some UI/UX design decisions you made in your previous projects and why?" It was a great round because I got to showcase my practical skills and explain the decisions I made while building frontend features.
- 3
Cultural Fit45 min
This was more of a cultural fit and vision round, where the Director of Technology gave me an overview of the company’s products and tech vision and discussed the company’s culture, the team dynamics, and the type of candidates they look for. I was asked:
- "Why are you looking to make a career switch, and what excites you about working here?"
- "How do you align with our tech vision and values?"
- "What are you looking for in a workplace environment?"

HM Round60 min
More conversational, the HR manager asked about my background, my family, and what compensation I was expecting. I was also asked to explain why I wanted to work at Cast Software. This round helped me understand the company’s values and what they expect from employees in terms of work-life balance and culture fit. It was also a great opportunity to discuss salary expectations.
