A forward-deployed engineer, or FDE, embeds with customers to turn an ambiguous problem into a working production system. The role combines full-stack engineering, technical discovery, deployment, and stakeholder communication. Unlike a consultant who mainly advises, an FDE is usually expected to write code and own delivery.

What does an FDE actually own?

A current OpenAI government FDE posting describes ownership from first prototype to stable production. The work includes mapping customer problems, building full-stack systems, guiding adoption, handling infrastructure, and feeding recurring field patterns back into product and research.

That is one role in a regulated public-sector context, not a universal description. It requires security clearance and up to 50 percent travel, constraints that do not apply to every FDE position. The reusable core is customer-embedded technical ownership.

Current Anthropic career listings also separate Forward Deployed Engineer, Applied AI roles from adjacent Applied AI Engineer, Solutions Architect, and Technical Deployment Lead roles. That separation is useful: the title alone does not tell you the exact balance of building, advising, and program leadership.

What does the work look like week to week?

An FDE commonly moves through five modes:

  1. Discovery. Understand the workflow, users, data, constraints, and decision maker.
  2. Scoping. Choose a narrow outcome that can prove value without creating an unmaintainable one-off.
  3. Building. Write application code, integrations, data pipelines, evaluations, and deployment infrastructure.
  4. Stabilizing. Add observability, security, tests, documentation, and operational ownership.
  5. Product feedback. Turn repeated customer needs into reusable tools, platform improvements, or roadmap input.

The hard part is not merely switching between meetings and code. It is making good tradeoffs when the customer wants speed, the product has constraints, and the system still needs to survive production.

What skills matter most?

Full-stack delivery

Many FDE roles ask for Python or JavaScript plus the ability to move across frontend, backend, APIs, data, and cloud infrastructure. You do not need to be the deepest specialist in every layer, but you must be able to unblock delivery.

AI-system judgment

For AI deployments, understand model behavior, retrieval, evaluations, latency, cost, data boundaries, and failure handling. A working demo is not enough if it cannot be observed or trusted.

Technical discovery

The stated request may not be the real problem. Strong FDEs identify the decision or workflow that matters, then define a build that can change it.

Communication under ambiguity

You will explain constraints to executives, translate domain needs to engineers, and make scope visible before it slips. Writing and facilitation are part of the technical work.

Operational ownership

Customer environments introduce security reviews, access controls, legacy systems, and deployment constraints. The engineer who can build but not stabilize the system is only doing half the job.

Who is a good fit for the role?

FDE can suit:

  • full-stack engineers who want more customer and product ownership;
  • solutions engineers who want to spend more time building;
  • consultants with strong production engineering skills;
  • applied AI engineers who enjoy messy domain problems;
  • technical founders who miss end-to-end delivery.

It is a worse fit if you want long stretches on one narrow technical problem, dislike frequent context switching, or do not want customer-facing accountability.

How do FDE interviews differ?

Expect the engineering fundamentals described in official company interview guides, plus delivery judgment.

OpenAI's interview guide says engineering interviews evaluate solution design, code quality, performance, testing, communication, and collaboration. For an FDE role, prepare examples that also show:

  • how you reduced an ambiguous request to a testable scope;
  • a tradeoff you made between speed and durability;
  • a deployment or incident you owned;
  • a difficult stakeholder alignment;
  • how customer feedback changed a reusable product or platform decision.

Use a real project for each story. State the constraint, your decision, the alternative you rejected, and the observable result.

Compensation varies by employer, level, location, travel, clearance, and equity structure.
