Expect an office-first, hard-charging, metrics-obsessed culture that prioritizes rapid results over flexibility. The San Mateo HQ is designed for in-person collaboration, and the trade is high-impact engineering for limited schedule flexibility. Engineers on Glassdoor rate the company 3.7/5, with only 49% recommending it to a friend; work-life balance sits at 3.2 and culture at 2.9. Recurring praise is for smart colleagues and mission; recurring complaints are pace and "on phones 24/7."

What Verkada pays

Verkada is private, so equity is illiquid private stock. Levels.fyi shows US SWE total compensation ranging from roughly $190K at L2 to $522K at L6. One Blind observer cautions that for an L5, "500K is reasonable. However, in order to match that TC, the recruiter will quote unrealistic values of the stock price" (Blind). Because the stock is private, treat quoted equity conservatively rather than counting it 1:1 against a public RSU offer.

Risks to know

Verkada was breached March 8-9, 2021, with attackers accessing customer video and data. The DOJ later imposed a $2.95M penalty and permanent injunction on Sep 4, 2024 for CAN-SPAM Act violations. Combine that history with the office-first mandate and a 3.7 Glassdoor rating, and candidates should expect a pressure-cooker environment with limited work-life balance.

Who thrives at Verkada (and who should not)

Thrives: senior product engineers comfortable in the office three to five days a week, people who like large-company polish without heavy bureaucracy, and engineers energized by applying AI to physical security. Should not join: candidates explicitly optimizing for work-life balance, parents needing schedule flexibility, and anyone unwilling to sustain a relentless "Monday tests" pace. If in-person velocity excites you the trade works; if it drains you, look elsewhere in this cohort.
